Affiliate Summit Wrap Up – The Short Version

I just got back from another Affiliate Summit event. This time in NYC. I’m sitting here trying to get the energy to post a big long post about the show… but I thought I’d just give a few quick thoughts instead.

1. NYC is a great city, in case you haven’t heard.

2. Being around remarkable people reminds you that you have to “do” something remarkable to “be” remarkable. Get to work.

3. Trust and influence always meant a lot, but soon they’re going to overtake the “traffic mindset”.

4. Agent Zero is the person you want to be. – ala Chris Brogan and Julien Smith’s keynote. – Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust

5. McSorley’s is the oldest bar in NYC. (1854, and I prefer the Darks to the lights)

6. The average attention span is now 2.7 seconds, or exactly the time it takes to digest a Tweet. – ala Shankman’s keynote.

7. See #2 again.

Business Around A Lifestyle

The world changed on 9/11 in so many different ways. Since that day, there has been a major shift happening in the way people think and live their lives. Sure, many people still chase the dollar as their ultimate goal. However, many more people have begun to realize that the world could, well, end tomorrow.

That's why people are choosing to pursue a business around a lifestyle, instead of a lifestyle controlled by their business. It makes sense, right? If the world was going to end tomorrow, would you still try to live your life in a way you never wanted to?

Take a look around you and you'll see that this shift to becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur is being adopted by more and more people every day. Some of those people are falling into it because they have been laid off from their jobs and are literally forced into it. Some of those people just figure out a way to make it happen because of the "end of the world" thinking mentioned above.

Thanks for all you did at Affiliate Summit, Jim – it was a remarkable job.

But I am not sure about your preference at McSorley's. How could you tell which was better with the unusual way you were drinking light and dark at the same time? http://twitpic.com/dkx7q

You taught me that move, c'mon, admit it. But I must say it was pretty impressive.

McSorley's id that named for how your head feels the next day? ;)

Oh no, yoiu're right – the Tweet thing will mean further erosion of attention span. Soon folks will wax nostalgic over the days when the news came in the form of complex and nuanced sound bites.
