How Does Google Blog Search Rank Blogs? Now We Know.

My nightly Techmeme roundup found me learning about how Google ranks blogs in its blog search engine. I always thought it worked just like Technorati defaults, which is by “most current, relevancy”. But I was wrong.

According to Search Engine Roundtable

What positive factors contribute to a blog ranking well in Google Blog Search?
How many RSS subscriptions there are to the blog,
How often people click on a link to the post in search results,
How many blogrolls the blog is in,
How many “high quality” blogrolls the blog is in,
If the blog offers visitors the chance to tag posts, whether people are tagging them,
References to the blog by sources other than blogs,
Pagerank, and;
Others.

What negatives factors contribute to a blog not ranking well in Google Blog Search?
If new posts appear in short bursts or at predictable intervals,
If the content of the posts doesn’t match the content of feeds from the posts,
If the content includes a lot of spam related keywords,
If a lot of content is duplicated in multiple posts from a blog,
Whether posts are the same size, or roughly the same size,
Link distribution of the blog,
If posts primarily link to one page or site, and;
Others.

Bottom line, again, build good content and you’ll be fine. However, a few things stand out, like adding the chance to tag posts and how many rss subscribers you have. Get those subscription buttons up high and push them!

Anyone know how Icerocket does it? I’m pretty sure it’s just like Technorati? It sure seems that way.

On another topic, what are these guys waiting for (Technorati & Icerocket)? Honestly, Google is about to kick their butts, and they’re sitting around doing pretty much nothing. Consider me perplexed.

Business Around A Lifestyle

The world changed on 9/11 in so many different ways. Since that day, there has been a major shift happening in the way people think and live their lives. Sure, many people still chase the dollar as their ultimate goal. However, many more people have begun to realize that the world could, well, end tomorrow.

That's why people are choosing to pursue a business around a lifestyle, instead of a lifestyle controlled by their business. It makes sense, right? If the world was going to end tomorrow, would you still try to live your life in a way you never wanted to?

Take a look around you and you'll see that this shift to becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur is being adopted by more and more people every day. Some of those people are falling into it because they have been laid off from their jobs and are literally forced into it. Some of those people just figure out a way to make it happen because of the "end of the world" thinking mentioned above.

    I am just knocking together a post – I normally rank very well for any topic I write about in Google Blog Search.

    It is much better to have those tags pointing to internal pages

    I have to agree with you on this one Jim. If Technorati doesn’t either come out with improvements to their core and/or features that actually apply to blogs then they could be in serious trouble. Once the Google train gets rolling on something refinements and improvements usually come hot and heavy.

    @Andy, send it over when done.

    @Steven, check this post I did a while back at ReveNews about how to fix icerocket. I did actually hear from the president of Icerocket after that, who did say they were planning changes, but I have seen nothing since.
