Listening Is The Key To Persuasion

Everyone sees things differently. Arguing with someone who sees things so much different that you do is futile, at first.

If you really want to convince someone to your point of view, the first thing you need to do is don’t try. Instead, try this. Ask them questions about why they feel that way. Get them to openly articulate their thoughts.

Listen.

Keep listening.

Then when they are done. You’ll understand their point of view. Then, and only then, can you begin your argument.

But don’t just in with “you’re wrong!” Talk to them about how you understand now why they think that way, and then counter their thoughts with your own.

Here’s an example. I talked a few older family members at Thanksgiving about the Obama presidency. The two of them were completely disgusted about how Obama is working so hard to “act like he’s the President before he takes office”. They said he was arrogant, and he was just trying to make himself look good.

They saw it different than I did.

From their perspective, which I figured out after listening first, Obama was overstepping his bounds and he should “just do it like it’s been done forever” which is to just wait until Bush leaves office, then come in and get started.

I disagreed, but I didn’t tell them they were wrong. After I listened, I instead made counter points about why I thought it was a good thing he was taking action now instead of waiting.

In the end, I don’t think I convinced them. But what I did was open the possibility in their head of the other point of view. Which in my book is a win.

People see things differently. You’ll never achieve persuasion unless you listen. This is true in life and business. Especially marketing.

Do you listen to your customers? No? Then how can you persuade them?

  • Jim,

Excellent points. Listening is a key part of communication. These days it seems a lot of folks are talking at people instead of talking to them. Listening with help make the conversation civil.

Listening also allows you to open yourself up to the possibility that you may be wrong. While we all like to think we're always right, every so often we're off the mark. A wise person once told me that it's good to consider all perspectives. It will help you adjust your position if needed, and it's strengthen your position if it's correct.

  • Jim,

Great observations. So often we fail to listen and jump right in to "persuading." Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic.

I impulsively printed this right after reading. This is just the sort of thing I needed to read right now. I had a lot on my mind about my career and the blind steps I'm about to make in a couple of weeks, and there are just too many opinions, ideas and POVs about that. Too many in fact, that I can't seem to lift my foot and make that first step. It basically just split me into two and now I'm fighting myself. And I realized upon reading this, that all I needed to do was block off the outer noises, listen to both sides and begin from there. It all just starts with listening.

According to me Excellent point is Listening,a key part of communication. we all think we're always right but sometime we are wrong because we are not listening. If you can listen carefully than you can give the answer.Than you can become a good speaker .
  • Sally Scott
If we don't listen carefully then we cannot express our thougths about that matter,we may not be capable to communicate and we also may not be able to achieve persuasion.so I think it's a very good fact that listening is the key to persuasion.

yes, its a Excellent advice! i am totaly agree with this sentence "Listening Is The Key To Persuasion" because without listening we can't give
a proper answer or we can't express ourself and we can't communicate with anyone so, i think after having a good listening skills
we can solve any kind of problem of customers. in short we can say good listening is a way of dealing with customers.

These are various keys to understanding others-
    Interview ,Questionnaire,observation
we need to listen others in interview & quessionaire but if we are not able to listen others then observation is a best way to perceiving other. For it we just need to grasping the activities of that person.
'Communication' is a way to understanding others. but a different way is 'observing the activies' of others by perceiving them without listening to him. everyone think alot, then how can we perceive them, its very simple. what they do. ok if i give a work to 3 peoples then all would have the different way to getting it done. then we can easily analyse that what they thing & learnt.
the best example of it how we can perceive a dog whereas he can't tell.. very simple through observation.
