What's
Your Career Story?
I
started my career by building Yellow Page ads in a basement
cubicle of a large national phone company. Over time, I jumped
around from print shop to small ad agency doing production art
work, etc...
Right
before the Internet 'hit', I took a gamble and joined a startup
new media agency where I learned how to sell and build websites.
After
a few years of learning the ropes, me and some associates took a
gamble and started our own online agency.
Venture
capitalists lined up at our door to hand over cash for essential
business items like Ikea furniture, a pool table, weekly
grocery runs for the staff, 21-inch monitors, pop tarts and
whatever else would help us attract and keep the top talent we
could find.
The
same VC's that gave us snack money, also brought in six-figure
deals for us to develop 'online business exchanges' or 'automated
manufacturing solutions' for their other investments. The classic
double dip.
I'll
save you the long story because you already know what happened.
One day, the bottom dropped out, and so did we.
What
I've left out of the story is that during those many years of web agency work and staff foosball games, I honed my skills in the
areas of search engine optimization and affiliate marketing, on
top of my knowledge and experience in web design, writing and
usability.
In
the middle of all of that, I began to write
professionally for ClickZ.com and Builder.com on the subjects
of web design, usability, Affiliate marketing and online
marketing.
So
here we are, about two years later. The agency I helped create is
still in existence, but I've moved on.
I've happily taken a full-time
position as the Director of Emarketing/Brand Manager for KowaBunga!
Technologies, headquartered in Detroit, MI, makers of My
Affiliate Program Affiliate Tracking Software! I work out of a
satellite office in Downtown Cleveland.
