Social Media Marketing Is Bullsh*t?

Is it possible to do marketing in social media through tools like Twitter? Some would argue that it’s impossible, while others would argue that it’s very possible. I wrote the other day about my experiment in creating Twittermethis.com. Since then, the story has been picked up in multiple locations. One of them called it a bad idea (Blogcritics), and the other called it brilliant (ReadWriteWeb).

It’s up to you to decide if you think it’s “spammy” or legit. I built it as a marketer trying to experiment in unknown territory. That’s what marketers like me do, we experiment and test and evaluate.

What do we know so far? Social media marketing is all about community building, and one of the easiest marketing goals (measurements) to achieve from the exercise is brand building. The video below talks about my experiences, past and present, in brand building and social media marketing.

Business Around A Lifestyle

The world changed on 9/11 in so many different ways. Since that day, there has been a major shift happening in the way people think and live their lives. Sure, many people still chase the dollar as their ultimate goal. However, many more people have begun to realize that the world could, well, end tomorrow.

That's why people are choosing to pursue a business around a lifestyle, instead of a lifestyle controlled by their business. It makes sense, right? If the world was going to end tomorrow, would you still try to live your life in a way you never wanted to?

Take a look around you and you'll see that this shift to becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur is being adopted by more and more people every day. Some of those people are falling into it because they have been laid off from their jobs and are literally forced into it. Some of those people just figure out a way to make it happen because of the "end of the world" thinking mentioned above.

I agree with all you said about not pushing stuff out to you, but just interacting w/ others. It’s a stretch to say that they must “Type your name” every time they @ you however. Snitter, twhirl, even the twitter’s site there is a button you can click to put the “@acmePhoto” automatically in the reply to box.

Nice video for sure, I found you through someone on twitter posting a link to this video (only on you tube)

Great video Jim. I certainly feel you need to build a brand for yourself especially when your building businesses online. That way when people see something from you they associate that with you and your products or your character. Really strong things when doing business in the social market place.

    Keep em coming.

Great video! I agree with the branding advice because especially online, where there is alot of anonymity, you must make your presence very real and prominent.

@adam, yeah, you’re right, but I think you get my point in the context?

    @blantonious, thanks, I will.

@Phyllis, being anonymous online seems pointless to me., right?

@coachdeb, It was way before 2 years ago. I remember I wrote the first ebook on how to make money blogging years and years ago and every hated me for it. Was called blogstoriches.

Being anonymous and effective social marketing can’t really go hand in hand. As far as social marketing being effective it depends a lot on your business. As far as the article you’ve written, excellent and educational.

Jim, you can be successful on social media marketing IF… you make your video brandable with your networks I mean is you should try to put some trademarks on your videos/audios in order for them to prosper.

Nice test and evaluation about that bullshit media marketing.

Catchy title. Seems to be doing the trick. We're going to see lot's of experiments on Twitter and Facebook for a while. Free Sham-Wow? :-) Jack Dorcey, Twitter's co-founder was on TV this past weekend and talked about their future including monetization. One of the most interesting parts was his differentiation between ’search’ and ‘discovery’. Every marketer should pay attention since today's marketing isn't just about pushing products. How can you take advantage of the real-time discovery capabilities of Twitter for your business? Market research? Customer support? Lead generation? I smell more experiments coming!
