Ted Murphy Of PayPerPost Is A Fucking Marketing Genius!

After I wrote this post 30 minutes ago, I went to wash the dishes before I put my kids to bed. As I was washing I had an epiphany.

Ted Murphy of PayPerPost is a fucking marketing genius!

The Scoble thing nailed it for me. Checkmate. Game over people.

I used to dislike PPP, but now, well, I think I must start rooting for them as I admire Ted Murphy for his marketing skills. Think about it for a moment. I have followed it from the start, and I estimate that the work Ted has done has generated close to half a million dollars in free, yes, free publicity for his company since the get go. Possibly more?

Don’t believe it? Look at this press page. Then do a search on Technorati and Google blog search.

Love them, or hate them. Ted Murphy is a marketing rock star. Un-f-ing, believable the coverage he has procured for that company. Write a book Ted, I’ll read it.

Business Around A Lifestyle

The world changed on 9/11 in so many different ways. Since that day, there has been a major shift happening in the way people think and live their lives. Sure, many people still chase the dollar as their ultimate goal. However, many more people have begun to realize that the world could, well, end tomorrow.

That's why people are choosing to pursue a business around a lifestyle, instead of a lifestyle controlled by their business. It makes sense, right? If the world was going to end tomorrow, would you still try to live your life in a way you never wanted to?

Take a look around you and you'll see that this shift to becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur is being adopted by more and more people every day. Some of those people are falling into it because they have been laid off from their jobs and are literally forced into it. Some of those people just figure out a way to make it happen because of the "end of the world" thinking mentioned above.

Not to put more viral marketing buzz where it’s not needed – but have you seen the reality show: RockStartup? Despite my complaints about the ethics of PayPerPost, I think you are right on to say there are some marketing geniuses at the company…! I watched the whole darned thing.

It’s pretty easy to be a marketing genius if you have millions in VC money to burn and lack any form of ethics.

All this press is bad press. I’ve never seen a company hated as much by the blogosphere since, well, Microsoft.

@Webomatica, I have seen it and I must say, that regardless of if you like it or not, both sides talk about it, so it wins from a pure marketing standpoint.

@Kevin, I don’t think having the money has anything to do with it. The free write-ups and buzz they have generated has nothing to do with throwing cash around. It’s utterly, amazing what they’ve accomplished.

    Jim,
I don’t know about being a genius, but thank you for the kind words : ) When I saw this post I was floored.

Ted, don’t be blow away. It’s true. I may not totally believe in your business model, but I totally believe in your marketing acumen.
