The Difference Between Users & Customers

Was just reading Jason Calacanis’s email newsletter. I’m not sure if we’re supposed to republish what we read in it, but I’m sure this tiny bit won’t matter. Jason was discussing the difference between Facebook and Apple and why Apple is going to win. This is what he said that summed it all up.

Facebook and Twitter have users. Apple has customers.

The difference? Customers give you their credit card number.

Truer words could not have been spoken. This is the big reveal that is happening to the “social world” soon enough. At the end of the day, it’s all about $$$ and not users and engagement. The companies that focus on getting the credit card will always be more valuable in bottom line.

Are you building a business around users? Or are you building a business around customers?
