She took matters into her own hands and did her own marketing. A lot of artists get record deals and then get abandoned by their label. I don't think it was a ruse on her part...she never said she was unsigned and anyone could have googled her name to see that she had already released a song on a Disney album. And even though she was signed, she didn't have an album to plug at the time.
