What’s In A Name? Sometimes Everything

I was just reading the latest print edition of Entrepreneur magazine when I noticed that my project YourPitchSucks.com was listed as a resource in an article about free stuff online. Yep, listed right there next to little sites like Craigslist and Linkedin.

So to date, this tiny little project I put together earlier this year on a whim has now been mentioned in places like:

  • Entrepreneur
  • Forbes
  • INC magazine
  • the Wall Street Journal
  • Brandweek
  • and featured in smaller local magazines and newspapers around the country
  • Including a full front-page business feature in a NE Ohio newspaper

Obviously, my pitch doesn’t suck, eh?

I have to admit that the name is the trigger. Sure, the idea is solid, but as I said in a magazine article last month, “Do you think I’d be getting this much press if the name of it was YourPitchIsNotGood.com?”

Answer… no.

Remember, part of getting attention is making people take a longer look (this is what my book is about). What you name things IS important.

Here’s a simple strategy for picking attention-getting names, over at the BlendthisBook blog.

Business Around A Lifestyle

The world changed on 9/11 in so many different ways. Since that day, there has been a major shift happening in the way people think and live their lives. Sure, many people still chase the dollar as their ultimate goal. However, many more people have begun to realize that the world could, well, end tomorrow.

That's why people are choosing to pursue a business around a lifestyle, instead of a lifestyle controlled by their business. It makes sense, right? If the world was going to end tomorrow, would you still try to live your life in a way you never wanted to?

Take a look around you and you'll see that this shift to becoming a lifestyle entrepreneur is being adopted by more and more people every day. Some of those people are falling into it because they have been laid off from their jobs and are literally forced into it. Some of those people just figure out a way to make it happen because of the "end of the world" thinking mentioned above.

Great point Jim, and well-executed on your part. I know my blog at http://www.pissd.com has gotten a lot more attention than if I had used the full name – Personal Injury, Social Security Disability.

That is so true, and keeping that in mind, the other day I was thinking of registering the name googlesucks.com, only to find that it was already taken, by none other than Google. Damn, I could have had so much fun with that site.

As for unusual names, my loadofbullshit.com gets quite a few hits. It's surprising how many people use the word as part of their search string.

Always liked this idea (that's why initially I sent you an email and gave you feedback — always thought it was smart). Great stuff, glad you're getting exposure for it.

That's an interesting strategy by Google. I suppose the best way to silence the opposition is to buy them out :o)

I agree. Everything starts with the name. It's definitely the trigger. You'd want to build an instant recognition and rapport with the readers (in this case, site visitors) even just with the title.
