Your Marketing & Sales Team Sucks

A bit of a rant today on the Daily Flip. Going all Feldman on ya. Basically, your marketing sucks, and your sales team too. Especially ad networks. Watch the video below to get my entire case.

I’m nicer in the video I think. Honestly though, I have to call you all out for bad marketing and even worse sales. Who in the ad network space besides one or two is actually doing anything innovative and attention-getting (booth babes do not count). Just a handful of you. The rest of you guys. Nada. Zip. Uninspiring marketing and sales teams that don’t know how to really sell.

Actually, I don’t really blame sales as much. I’ve been doing sales support as a marketer for years and years (yes, for an ad network once), and I can tell you that I consider it my job as the marketer to give the sales team the right things to say and show. This isn’t happening now/today.

You marketing sucks. Agree? Or disagree, leave a comment. Watch for challenge at end of video.

Yes! Yes! Yes! The Marketing and sales teams suck so much that they have turned themselves inside-out! I ask questions like: What makes you any different than x selling or promoting the same thing? The reply: blank looks, or hype, or nothing at all.

Another point, I work with people designing new websites. The problem here is when I ask them what will set them apart. They are basically designing the same site with a new name at the top…Woopee! I guess they think that people will come just because they brought up a site! Some thriller that is!

To change a qoute — “Get away marketer, you bother me!”

    Hey Jim,

    You’re SO right!

I get those calls from network representatives once or twice a week as well and they’re totally lame. Stupidly, they all start the same way — “What can we do to get you to promote more of our offers?”

Do these guys know anything about marketing? How about starting with an answer to the question “What’s in it for me?” which would stop me from responding “Do you have any clue as to what I promote?”. Sheesh, like THAT’s the world’s biggest secret. I made it really simple for them, and while most have my book on their desks or in their offices, my bet is that they’ve never cracked the binding. Their loss.

That said, there are some really good operators out there … ShareResults would be the first one that comes to mind for me.

    Cheers,
    Ros

Yeah, why aren’t they reading your books Ros? I didn’t say all of them sucked, just most of them. :) I would be happy to have them take me up on my challenge. Thanks for stopping by. Saw your post on BANS. Is that your product? Any good?

    Well said Jim.

Being on the merchant side we get similar offers to join up from the dozens of networks that are out there, yet none of them can give us a real reason to do so. I mean, you can’t honestly tell me that there are any larger affiliates out there who are working with some new, random CPA network who don’t have an account with a major network as well.

I really have a hard time understanding why anyone would get into the CPA network business at this point unless they have some mind blowingly remarkable point of differentiation. And that doesn’t mean innovations like “naked links” - I’m talking something that will be loved by affiliates and merchants alike.

Anyway, good vid. Hopefully these companies are listening.

    Hi Jim,

    To answer your question…

BANS (Build a Niche Store) is software that was developed by Kelvin Firminger to allow website owners to place eBay listings on their site. The software has become very popular and is being used to good advantage by lots of affiliates. You can see a sample of it on my travel blog. What you see there is stock out of the box… I’m not very geeky. :-)

    Cheers,
    Ros

So throw us a bone - what size shirt DO you wear? :p

I have to say that as an AM myself with a pretty young program I’ve yet to really dive into the courtship of “super affiliates” because I already know that the same old card or email isn’t going to cut it. I have been trying to come up with something fresh and really eye catching and until I have a really spectacular idea I’m not going to even attempt to approach the big clients. I’d rather stand out as a first impression than be lost in the sea of lame attempts before getting it right.

It’s a tough world for publishers and merchants as everything is changing, so it’s good for someone like you to be honest and really challenge people to be innovative and take the bull by the horns. I’m enjoying the show as always.

James, I hope they are too. So far, no takers to my challenge.

Thanks for info on BANS Ros. Horrible name for a product though?

Trish, At least you realize that normal isn’t going to cut it. Good luck to you.
