Hi Jim -
I'm the young lady in the photo who wrote the harsh blog post. Frankly, I had always heard the guy was an ass, but I wanted to meet him and form my own opinion. I think the photo speaks volumes - Mike was looking away hooting with his friends. In his company, I felt like a freshman at a senior boy's frat party. Even if I did misread him (though I'm a firm believer that your gut doesn't misread), he can't afford to make that kind of impression on someone, at his own event. Very sophomoric - a blogger should know better!

@ Lincoln - Actually, Arrington made a point of announcing to the crowd that he was not allowed to drink at the party and couldn't wait for the after party, which began at 10pm at an Irish pub. So, he was very sober ;)

You know, it's possible he might have been completely wasted in that encounter. Not that being sober would have helped much. ;-)

Being successful and rich means nothing if it takes away your humanity.

@Dan, I agree, the brand experience rule applies to everything in life, I believe.

@Leather, yes, be nice. :)

Be nice and people will like you? That would be great if it were true. But the sad truth is that you don't really need to be nice any more once you are successful. People will like you anyway. Maybe not like you but certainly your success. And i feel the fact that we sit here discussing a not very nice person, is a case in point.

As a personal branding evangelist and expert, I do agree with your points. I believe the the same brand strategies applied to corporations and products can be re-positioned for people. It's less about write-ups for Arrington and more about who you are, what you can deliver and the total experience you give off.

Thanks Jim!

I think you have to be so careful of you as a brand. I small thing you say or do to someone could echo through the blogosphere. This is why I try and be as nice and helpful to everyone.
