So Perez Hilton is taking his videos off of YouTube after being slighted about a copyright violation. Heck, I don’t blame him. He only made about $5k from 25 million video views? I’d leave to. But that story is boring. Fine, take down your videos. Here’s his pissy YouTube video. Feh, so entertaining?
Let’s talk about his videos, because they’re crap. YouTube should have dumped them off their network a long time ago, yet, they didn’t. The question is… why?
Because YouTube is still trying to figure out what they are. On one hand they want all the juicy celebrity copyright infringed stuff, and on the other hand, they don’t. It’s time to decide GooTube.
I’ve been wanting YouTube to launch a business type channel for a long time, yet I don’t see any word about that. Where’s the love for the professionals’ Tubers?
I realize that the vast majority of your viewers want to see Britney crotch videos, but c’mon, let’s get it together, the rest of the professional world does not. It’s almost as if I feel dirty uploading video to YouTube that is somewhat professionally produced and is good quality video.
It’s time for YouTube to decide. Are you going to cater to the Perez Hilton’s of the world forever? I hope not, because I expect more. Or is it just me?
Real business fits on Youtube just like it fits on Myspace…
It would be too confusing for the users, so I think it should stay separate like Myspace and LinkedIn are separate.
I think he does some funny stuff, and certainly has a following.
That said, he was in the wrong here.
Like everybody else. he didn’t read the terms. But he had to know he was using protected material without permission.
He does have a point that they should send notices to their internal mail system, too.

No, it says he “received” $5k.

it takes 2 months until you get paid.
So, those $5k must be for the first of three months.
If we divide 25 million video views by 3, we get ~ 8.3 million views.
So, IF he generated 8.3M views in the first month
and Youtube/Google paid him $5k for that,
then it would mean a payout of $0.60 per thousand views.

IF that is correct, and Youtube generates only $1 per thousand views,
then $0.60 payout is OK.
i kinda like his videos .. but no matter what i think he has made his money from it..
Don’t dog on Perez. Sure, his videos aren’t that great, but how can you not like that guy. He serves up celb gossip on a golden platter and for that, I salute him! I had the pleasure of interviewing him at the SXSW ’06 Playboy party and he really is a funny, nice guy with a keen eye for degrading celebrity news.
As for YouTube, the quality of video compression they have will never lend itself to higher quality videos. I think the business folks are flocking to Kyte, Blip and the like.
Jon, I guess I’m not really dogging Perez. I mean, he does his thing well, but I’m not a fan of celebrity gossip I guess. I think my post was more about my frustration with YouTube, not Perez. I’m sure he’s a nice guy.
Blip for business? If you read their terms, it says no professional content. In fact, one group I’m associated with recently had their account suspended for uploading high-quality business videos. I need to post about that. Ridiculous.

I don’t think youtube have any control over the videos posted or removed. It will be very tough for them to check each and every video for copyright issues. And if youtube all copyrighted videos to be uploaded, they will in trouble.
My only complaint against youtube is that, they should have stood against copyrighted videos being uploaded right from the begining.
