Landing pages are probably one the most important things to know about when attempting to be successful in the Internet marketing arena. Ok, not probably, they ARE one of the most important things.

Snuggies & Howard Stern: Which One Is Selling & Why?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the psychology of the typical American citizen in this poor economy and trying times. Why? Because I’m a marketing and sales person and it’s my job to understand why people buy things. Plus, it fascinates me.

Why “Shock Jocks” Aren’t Selling Anymore…
You remember Howard Stern right? He quickly became irrelevant when he moved to Sirius satellite radio. Out of sight, out of mind, right? It makes sense. Less listeners = less relevance to the mainstream of which read newspapers, watch television, etc…

But if Howard were to come back today on “free” radio or podcasts… would he be as popular? I argue the answer to that is no. The days of the “shock jock” are gone. For one, there’s too much noise out there in smaller silo’s for him to compete in. And two, it’s clear to me that American’s (all I can speak for) have moved beyond “being shocked” and entered into a different state of media awareness. In other words… I think the Internet made us smart enough to know that shock jocks (or similar types of people) are boring anymore.

When I said The A-list was dead, I believe that applied to people like Howard Stern too.

Look at what Gary Vaynerchuk did to Howard Stern. Gary is dead-on right. Howard Stern is frightened to death about the state of things nowadays. We don’t need him anymore. Watch video below.

Why Snuggies Are Selling?…
You’ve seen the Snuggie right? It’s that half blanker/half backwards robe you put on and lay on your couch in? It’s becoming a huge seller and spurring many creative spoofs and marketing/community campaigns.

But why is it selling? Why are American’s dishing out $19.95 for this product?

I think of a Snuggie as a cocoon. A kind of warm, safe, item that gives me comfort. I can put it on and sit on my couch and watch television and forget about the problems of the world. In today’s economic crisis, that makes sense, no?

What’s the Point Jim?
The point of all this is to understand why people buy, and why they don’t. And more importantly, for you to understand how to position your product/service into the current times as the emotional level of buyers changes over time.

That’s really what selling is all about. Emotion. That’s why we buy at the core level. That’s what excellent marketing invokes in you to make a purchase.

Using Social Media To Sell Offline

Yesterday as I was browsing my Twitter followers, I came across a retweet from someone I know in Cleveland who linked to a local fitness company who made a video about their training programs. So I clicked on the Twitter link, went to the blog, and watched the YouTube video.

Then I picked up the phone to call them to find out how I could join.

SALE!!! DING!!! SOCIAL MEDIA JUST SOLD SOMETHING OFFLINE!!!

So let’s review again. Twitter is where I found the link. The blog had a post that included a YouTube video, which I watched. Then I called the company and asked about joining.

See what happened here?

Three very nice social media tools worked together to drive an ROI for an offline business.

This can be done… Don’t believe you can’t do it, because you can.

Rackspace Hears My Twitter Whining

Well, I’m not sure how much they “get it”, but I know they use it and monitor it. Case in point…

Last week I was informed via phone that I had just passed my fifth year of hosting with Rackspace. It’s obvious I love the company and their services because why else would I pay so much for it if I didn’t? FYI, if you want to find out about getting a server at Rackspace either go here and fill out my form or contact me and I’ll give you my personal rep’s information.

So back to the point. After I got notified and personally thanked from my account manager. I went on Twitter and started whining about how I should have gotten more from them than a phone call and thank you.

About an hour later I get a call from someone at Rackspace who saw my Twitter and was apologetic and wanted to thank me even more. After that call, someone else called me and thanked me again.

Then a few days later, I received a package in the mail from the team at Rackspace. It was some boxes of microwave popcorn and some Jones Soda and a t-shirt. But a few days later I got a really nice surprise when a package arrived that was a really nice Rackspace backpack.

All from whining about how I didn’t get anything on Twitter…. :)

So, I have to give it to the social media team at Rackspace, they are listening. And then they’re taking action too. Nice work, and thanks for the stuff.

Although, it appears someone has their Twitter username and is squatting on it?

Why Haven’t You Started Your Live Ustream Show Yet?

I wanted to start doing a weekly Web show, so I put out a call for a co-host in Cleveland and got Jeremy Borger to show up. Below is the live on tape (recording) of the show we did earlier today. We talk about Twitter, and the Superbowl trends and other geeky related things on the Internets.

The reason I’m showing you this is to inspire you. It’s literally this easy to do. No script, no fancy lights, no fancy equipment. I took my Mac laptop and put it on a stool. Started Ustream.tv, clicked “start broadcast” and that’s it. Live to the Internet, and it records too.

You can be doing this. You SHOULD be doing this. Do something, anything! If you know a lot about Tikis, well, then get your tiki collection out and talk about them on camera. Then put that video recording on your tiki blog, and then send a message out to your Twitter friends you have a new video about antique tikis. Then announce it on Facebook, etc…

I could go on and on. The point is. If you don’t try it… your competitor will. Just try it. When you do, send me your video so I can check it out.

I’m A Football Fanatic! Do You Create Fans?

I am. That’s why it’s sad for me this time of year when the Superbowl is about to happen. That means football is over! Stinks. Plus, my Cleveland Browns never play into the postseason. I’m not much of a hockey, baseball or basketball fan either. Although, I will watch King Lebron and my Cavs hopefully roll to a championship, no jinx!

Earlier this month I was in Las Vegas emceeing the Affiliate Summit event and I was lucky enough to get invited to a poker tournament by Jason from a company called Football Fanatics. Here’s a pic of me at the poker table. And below that, a video of me after I got crushed at the table.

The reason for this post is to talk about being a fan. Jason and Football Fanatics made me a fan by inviting me to join their poker tournament and by having great products. Do you create fans for your product/service/brand? You should be.

A Good Pitch: Want A Better Relationship With Your Cat?

As you may or may not know, I run a site called YourPitchSucks.com and I get about 10-20 pitches a day that I review for free. Now, 99% of the time the pitches do indeed suck. But… every once in a while, I get a pitch that I really like.

How to Make Your Cat ADORE You?

Dear Cat Lover,

First, I have to warn you: These techniques really work, so be careful what you ask for!

If you want your cat to adore you, you must first adore your cat. If Kitty falls in love with you after you learn to follow this “courtship” plan, you had better be willing to have a ‘feline fan club’ – even if there is only one cat in it. You don’t want to make her love you then let her down with a betrayal if you change your mind.

I am surrounded, as I write this, by 10 cuddly cats who adore me. They keep me warm at night and reward me by day with their loving attitudes. They entertain me with their cute antics, and they touch my soul with their purring and those loving eyes that would melt the hardest heart.

They follow me around the house as if waiting for their next assignment. They don’t make messes anymore, and finally, I can stop worrying about the couch being shredded. Never has life with cats been more rewarding!

I have to confess, though. It wasn’t always like this. My cats used to destroy the furniture, the carpet and the woodwork. I even caught Woody peeing on the stove one day! I screamed! He took off like a shot and hid for days, peeing in the corners. (Obviously, screaming doesn’t fix the problem…)

Oh, I wanted to throw him outside… but I didn’t. I couldn’t allow my frustrations to get the best of me, nor could I put him at risk in an outdoor environment full of the usual hazards: cars, toxic substances, cruelty, bad weather, stray dogs, other cats who might hurt him or cause some disease …

I couldn’t do that to him, because I loved him. (He has since died of old age, but I still think of him often.) I felt totally inadequate to change his bad behavior. How did my friends manage to keep their cats happy? Why couldn’t I figure it out? I was miserable… and so were my cats.

But then something happened that changed everything — luckily for me, and very luckily for my cats.

I went on vacation for a month. When I got back, I was stunned to discover that they were traumatized by my absence! They were angry, nervous, wouldn’t eat, cried constantly for about 3 days, and wouldn’t come near me, glaring at me from a distance.

OK, it finally dawned on me — they missed me! That could only mean one thing: Cats have feelings.

Amazingly, I did not know that until now. Like most people, I thought cats were…. just cats! Furry, fun, frustrating at times, but… just cats.

But now my reality had been shaken. Well, if they have feelings, and I hurt them, could that explain bad behavior? How could I have missed this important knowledge? The answer was very simple, really. It was right there in front of me all the time.

And now I would like to share the secrets I discovered … with you!

Why do I care?

Because I am a cat rescuer. I run a shelter. If you could spend a day with me, it would break your heart to see all the cats no one wants anymore because the unrealistic expectations their owners had for them didn’t work out. People throw their cats away to the tune of several million a year … and there is nothing wrong with them!

Every day I look at more than 100 sad little faces … cats who are wondering what happened to their owners. Every day they ask me if today is the day they get to go home.

But I have to tell them no, not today, honey. Not today. But maybe we’ll get lucky tomorrow and someone will want you again. And if we’re really lucky, they will already know the secrets of a great relationship with a cat… the secrets I tell you in my book, How to Make Your Cat Adore You.

Sadly, not many people know these things.

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. Been there, done that. And I felt so guilty! Poor cat. It probably wasn’t even his fault. But I didn’t know what else to do! I didn’t know where to turn…
