Resist the temptation to follow someone else’s path. I’m down at the Modern Media Man Summit in Atlanta this week learning and networking. I love going to shows because you get to absorb other perspectives and see how other people are being successful. It’s refreshing… and tempting.
For example, I just attended a wonderful session about how big time brands want to interact with Mommy & Daddy bloggers. Two things occurred to me in this session.
1. I should start a daddy blog.
2. I should get into the consulting business for big brands who want to reach influencers.
Great thoughts, right? Wrong. After a few minutes, I realized a few things.
1. I don’t want to write a daddy blog.
2. I don’t want to own a business consulting to big brands primarily.
Neither of those are “my thing”. Sure, I could make them successful, but why would I go out and do something I don’t really want to do? It doesn’t make sense does it? Why build a business that you don’t want?
I talked about this in my presentation here at the show yesterday. We should all be striving to build a business around a lifestyle, not the other way around. It makes no sense to do something that isn’t your passion. If you try it, and I have, you will find that it will never be as successful as it could, because you don’t really want to be doing it.
So my message to you today is wait. Keep searching. Don’t just jump on something because you’re going to make a lot of money with it. Money is great, but at the end of the day, you want to build/create something that is truly meaningful to you, don’t you?
I know I do. It’s taken me years and years to figure it out, and frankly, I’ve still yet to get it nailed down 100%. Take your time, from what I’ve been told, if you can wait until you find it, it will be the best thing you ever did.
Don’t settle. Keep striving for it. It will come.
