Are You A Modern Media Man?

I just accepted a speaking slot at the new conference called Modern Media Man Summit. It takes place in Atlanta on Sept 9-11 in 2010. You should go. Why?

Because this conference is different. Here’s what it’s all about.

The Modern Media Man Summit will provide dads and men bloggers around the world the opportunity to gather in Atlanta September, 9-11, 2010 to attend an important conference featuring the latest in social media: blogging, podcasting and vlogging, while also harnessing the excitement and electricity of the Internet’s latest buzz.

There are dozens of renowned conferences held annually throughout the world for bloggers, but what none of them have created is a place to gather the new modern media men, specifically, the daddy bloggers, whose influence is fast increasing in the contemporary online space.

The M3 Summit’s goal is to bring together brands, bloggers, and some of the brightest minds in the industry to experience, teach and talk about how the role of Modern Media Man is changing. We know the time, location and topics of focus– educational, personal and business tracks–all will work together to generate the perfect storm in the blogosphere.

This is the best opportunity of the year for men and daddy bloggers, whether they’re stay at home dads, work at home dads, business professionals, the lone entrepreneur, marketer, advertiser and public relations professional to gather in one spot and plot a new course toward progress.

I wanted to speak at this summit because I feel I have a lot to say about being a “modern media man”. I’ve been doing this Web thing for over 15-years now, and I have a lot to share about life, business and love (with my wife). Things that are directly related to the reason why this conference was put together.

I’m going to speaking about how a modern media man can navigate through the tough world of home life and “online” life. If you’re like me, you know that those two things often collide, and can make big problems. Hope to see you there! Here’s my topic session.

Topic: Honey, The Internet Is My Business, Not My Life

How do you balance a career of uber-Internet geek-nicity with a “real” home family life of wife and kids and dog and house and car payments, etc….? It’s not easy, and potentially very toxic if both worlds collide. Are you a Web geek like Jim? If you are then you know the Internet is intertwined into our lives, not because we want it to be, but because it’s our business. The problem is, sometimes our families and spouses don’t understand that, and because of that, problems ensue. Enjoy a fun, informative story about how Jim has (and hasn’t) handled it and pick up tips on how you can as well.

A Day In The Life With Gary Vaynerchuk

I spent a day hanging out with Gary Vaynerchuk last year. If you don’t know Gary, he’s the “wine guy” who does owns a liquor store in New Jersey, and who also speaks, and consults and has books and produces a Web video show that’s viewed by 100k+ people every day. Yeah, he’s a dynamic guy.

Ever wonder what it would be like to follow Gary around and hang with him for the day? I did, and here’s my writeup about it. I hope you enjoy it. It includes videos.

Oh yeah, go buy his book Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion. You will love it. It will get you pumped up, believe me.

How To Make Money With

Just had an interesting idea. Have you seen yet? It’s this voyeuristic new (fun?) video experience where you randomly connect with people around the world through your web cam. Pointless you say? Well, kinda. But what if you can make some money from it? Here’s an idea for you to try.

Get a computer with a webcam and an Internet connection. Now, design an ad, to be displayed on either your computer monitor or on a sheet of paper, whatever. The point is, it’s an ad.

Example: “Love Snuggies? Get 50% off The Snuggie at”

Of course, should be your website, or affiliate link. Now, point your webcam at that ad and turn on Chatroulette and let it run. I would guess that you could get thousands and thousands of views on that ad every single day. Would people buy? I don’t know. It probably depends on the product you’re selling and the ad.

If it was me, I’d try to promote something fun and dumb, kinda like the Snuggie. Something everyone might buy, or knows about. The Chatroulette audience seems to be full of perverts and just regular curious people, so you figure out what what might sell.

On a similar/fun note, check out the video of this guy doing piano songs to random people.

Jim Kukral Does Not Suck (My New Jingle)

I’ve got a new jingle courtesy of a new, very cool, online project called See it below. Apparently, I do not suck, haha.

What I love about this is that not only did he come up with the lyrics on his own, but he also did a very clever video for it. I’m impressed. And the best part is since I bought early in the year, I paid only $20 for this. Want your own jingle? He’s already sold out until mid March. The costs do really go up a lot day after day so if you want in now get in now. I’m not sure if he’ll be able to sell an entire year at this rising costs schedule, but if he does, he’ll make a lot of money, and have 365 jingles to his credit.

A very interesting idea, similar to, another project I really love. Both of these projects will be featured in my book.

You can view my old jingle here (or below).

Book Marketing Secrets!

Today I’m talking with author and book marketing expert Warren Whitlock. You can also find Warren’s stuff at (Actually, this interview is long overdue to be aired, sorry Warren).

Click the play button below to listen to the podcast!

I had the pleasure of meeting Warren at Blogworldexpo this year and even had lunch with him and Dave Taylor. Warren is a pro who knows his stuff and has the experience to back it up. If you’re going to write a book, you’re going to need to learn how to market it. Warren gives some good advice for how you’re going to get it done.

He’s a swell guy too! Here are the show notes:

How important is it for an author to be a marketer nowadays?
What’s the first thing I have to do to start my book?
After I start a blog and reserve my name, how much work is involved before I start the book?
You should have a blog or website for you name AND your book title, use both.
Become a thought-leader in the community of your niche.
Use feedback from readers to build your book.

Your Press Releases Suck. Fix Them Now!

STOP! Don’t send out that press release just yet! Are you sure it doesn’t suck? I’ve launched a new free service at YPS? is a service to help you pitch better. You send out press releases all the time that never work, right? You know why? Because you’re not a public relations professional, so you don’t know how to frame your story the best way.

Did you know that 98% of press releases are tossed in the trash can after being given less than 5 seconds of review? Companies waste $450m each year sending out press releases that end up in a gigantic black hole.

YPS? allows anyone to submit their pitch for free and get notes back on how it can be made better. Your pitch could be a press release, or a pitch to bloggers, or whatever.

Consider this the place you go BEFORE you submit to HARO, or Remember, it’s free, so pass it on please?

Update, the contest is over. Voting can continue, but I took a screen grab of the votes when it expired and will be posting it in another blog post soon. You can still vote if you wish, it just won’t count.

Ok, it’s time to vote. Watch the video and look at the entries, and vote in the poll below for your favorite picture. The winners, who will be the top 5 vote getters, will each get a $100 certificate to buy anything they want on Zappos, even more mandals!

Yes, you can vote for yourself and you can encourage your friends to vote for you. I would!

Remember to follow @zappos on Twitter and join the Zappos affiliate program.

Wine School with Gary Vaynerchuk

A few weeks ago I got to spend a day and a night hanging out with Gary Vaynerchuk of as he was in town for a book signing. The full video experience of my time spent with him will come later, but for now, I have a video about a person I met who was in Gary’s entourage… Marianne Frantz of the Cleveland Wine School.

The video below is an interview I did with Marianne about the Cleveland Wine School, with a funny impromptu appearance from Gary V in a few places. Pretty funny. The video was shot at lunch after a live taping of the Thunder show with Gary in Cleveland Browns Stadium (personal video on that to come later). Go watch, great episode.

Why am I posting this video about a regional company when my blog is read by thousands of people who don’t live in Cleveland? Well, it’s a perfect example of how anyone can make a video commercial for their company with a simple inexpensive camera. Something I encourage all businesses to do. Tell me this isn’t a video you’d like to show to your customers to educate them about your business?

The whole thing took me 10 minutes to edit, and by using the Flip camera, easy to record. Why aren’t you doing video yet? Give me a ring so I can help you get on it, or sign up for my free Online Video Toolkit for some free advice.

Here’s the video on Youtube if you wish to view it there.

Niche Marketing: Your Product + “What’s Hot” = Success

Shmuly gets it. He’s taken a traditional piece of Jewish headdress called the Kippah and combined it with current trends, in this case the Presidential election here in the USA. Check out his product at Pretty smart.

In this video I talk more about how smart marketers like Shmuly know to take their product or service and combine it with current events or trends to make more sales and get publicity. It works. You can do it too.

Take a moment and think about how your product or service relates to what’s hot right now. Sports (the Olympics?), entertainment, politics? You get the point. Now make the connection and do something creative. The press will eat it up.

Getting Attention Trick: Memory Sticks

Mike from 1115Media is pretty smart. At the Affiliate Summit he handed me my own little memory stick with my name written on it, and guess what, it has a special custom message for me in it. See the video below.

Guess what? He got my attention. I got so much stuff from the show and I don’t have time to go through it all. It’s things like this that stand out and get attention, and in today’s world, especially for guys like me, this is the way to go.

So nice job Mike! You got my attention. Couldn’t have been too expensive either?
