A Good Pitch: Want A Better Relationship With Your Cat?

As you may or may not know, I run a site called YourPitchSucks.com and I get about 10-20 pitches a day that I review for free. Now, 99% of the time the pitches do indeed suck. But… every once in a while, I get a pitch that I really like.

Here’s one of them. Pasted in just as the person wrote to me on the site. This pitch is good because it tells a story, and solves a problem for the target. Lots to learn here.

BEGIN PITCH///

Want a better relationship with your cat?

Are you at the end of your rope, ready to kick the cat out?

Who else wants to know …

How to Make Your Cat ADORE You?

Dear Cat Lover,

First, I have to warn you: These techniques really work, so be careful what you ask for!

If you want your cat to adore you, you must first adore your cat. If Kitty falls in love with you after you learn to follow this “courtship” plan, you had better be willing to have a ‘feline fan club’ – even if there is only one cat in it. You don’t want to make her love you then let her down with a betrayal if you change your mind.

I am surrounded, as I write this, by 10 cuddly cats who adore me. They keep me warm at night and reward me by day with their loving attitudes. They entertain me with their cute antics, and they touch my soul with their purring and those loving eyes that would melt the hardest heart.

They follow me around the house as if waiting for their next assignment. They don’t make messes anymore, and finally, I can stop worrying about the couch being shredded. Never has life with cats been more rewarding!

I have to confess, though. It wasn’t always like this. My cats used to destroy the furniture, the carpet and the woodwork. I even caught Woody peeing on the stove one day! I screamed! He took off like a shot and hid for days, peeing in the corners. (Obviously, screaming doesn’t fix the problem…)

Oh, I wanted to throw him outside… but I didn’t. I couldn’t allow my frustrations to get the best of me, nor could I put him at risk in an outdoor environment full of the usual hazards: cars, toxic substances, cruelty, bad weather, stray dogs, other cats who might hurt him or cause some disease …

I couldn’t do that to him, because I loved him. (He has since died of old age, but I still think of him often.) I felt totally inadequate to change his bad behavior. How did my friends manage to keep their cats happy? Why couldn’t I figure it out? I was miserable… and so were my cats.

But then something happened that changed everything — luckily for me, and very luckily for my cats.

I went on vacation for a month. When I got back, I was stunned to discover that they were traumatized by my absence! They were angry, nervous, wouldn’t eat, cried constantly for about 3 days, and wouldn’t come near me, glaring at me from a distance.

OK, it finally dawned on me — they missed me! That could only mean one thing: Cats have feelings.

Amazingly, I did not know that until now. Like most people, I thought cats were…. just cats! Furry, fun, frustrating at times, but… just cats.

But now my reality had been shaken. Well, if they have feelings, and I hurt them, could that explain bad behavior? How could I have missed this important knowledge? The answer was very simple, really. It was right there in front of me all the time.

And now I would like to share the secrets I discovered … with you!

Why do I care?

Because I am a cat rescuer. I run a shelter. If you could spend a day with me, it would break your heart to see all the cats no one wants anymore because the unrealistic expectations their owners had for them didn’t work out. People throw their cats away to the tune of several million a year … and there is nothing wrong with them!

Every day I look at more than 100 sad little faces … cats who are wondering what happened to their owners. Every day they ask me if today is the day they get to go home.

But I have to tell them no, not today, honey. Not today. But maybe we’ll get lucky tomorrow and someone will want you again. And if we’re really lucky, they will already know the secrets of a great relationship with a cat… the secrets I tell you in my book, How to Make Your Cat Adore You.

Sadly, not many people know these things.

So, if I can teach you how to make life more rewarding for you and your cat, then I can truly save them, and I won’t have to do it by sheltering them and finding new homes.

Does this sound like your cat?

* Aloof … He doesn’t seem to care about you. He just wants you around when it’s time to eat!

* Aggressive … If you try to pet her, she growls or hisses, or even tries to bite you!

* Bored … He won’t play anymore. He just lays around the house, leaving clumps of fur on the couch.

* Disgusting … She urinates behind your chair, or in a corner you can’t reach!

* Destructive … He has shredded your favorite chair!

* Messy … She gobbles her food like there’s no tomorrow, then throws it up on the best carpet in the house – never in a room with linoleum!

* Disgusting (again) … He left you a “present” on your pillow!

Are you ready to throw the little ingrate out the door?

Are you ready to take him to the shelter?

Did you already give him up?

You buy him nice food, nice toys, a great bed, and he gives you the bum’s rush anyway! Are you frustrated, or what?

Is it time to fight back? Show him who’s boss? Give him what he deserves?

What if I told you he deserves another chance?

Or is it time to try a new approach?

I used to beat my head on this wall, too. I could never throw any of my cats outside, but I finally got used to co-existing with some of them. You know … like a roommate or spouse after a fight? You go about your business without talking to each other … ignoring each other … avoiding eye contact … barely acknowledging their presence?

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. Been there, done that. And I felt so guilty! Poor cat. It probably wasn’t even his fault. But I didn’t know what else to do! I didn’t know where to turn…

Is that how you’re feeling right now?

Relax. I learned how to handle these problems … and so can you!

And because I love cats, as I know you do too, I want to help you make it work, for you and for your kitty.

Would more people keep their cats if they knew how to change things?

Since I discovered these secrets, everything is different. My cats all love me, and I love them.

NOW they …

* Come when called …

* Purr a lot …

* Rarely scratch the furniture …

* Stampede to the door to greet me when I come home …

* Want to be in my lap …

* Play with their toys every day …

* Greet my visitors politely …

* Love to ride around on my shoulder and nuzzle my ear …

* Purr a lot … oh, did I already say that?

But the best part is, you can see results almost immediately. It depends on the cat, but most respond quickly to the loving techniques I outline in my new book.

How To Create The Perfect PR Pitch

Earlier this year I created YourPitchSucks.com because I wanted to help small businesses create better pitches. Too many companies have no idea how to promote their ideas or services. Their pitches really do suck. But it’s not their fault… they’re not professional marketing or PR people.

Since I launched YPS, I’ve been blown away by the response. Hundreds of pitches have been submitted and hundreds of pitch reviews have been returned. All in my spare time. So I know a little bit about bad pitches as you can imagine.

I wanted to take it a step further and give back even more, so I’ve created a free teleseminar called The Perfect Pitch. Details below.

Free Webinar: Creating The Perfect Pitch! Wednesday, December 3rd at 1:00pm Eastern (10am Pacific) Understand how to create a pitch that actually works to bring you more sales, or leads or publicity!

Your Press Releases Suck. Fix Them Now!

STOP! Don’t send out that press release just yet! Are you sure it doesn’t suck? I’ve launched a new free service at YourPitchSucks.com. YPS? is a service to help you pitch better. You send out press releases all the time that never work, right? You know why? Because you’re not a public relations professional, so you don’t know how to frame your story the best way.

Did you know that 98% of press releases are tossed in the trash can after being given less than 5 seconds of review? Companies waste $450m each year sending out press releases that end up in a gigantic black hole.

YPS? allows anyone to submit their pitch for free and get notes back on how it can be made better. Your pitch could be a press release, or a pitch to bloggers, or whatever.

Consider this the place you go BEFORE you submit to HARO, or PRweb.com. Remember, it’s free, so pass it on please?

A Press Release Should Tell A Story

Great write up here outlining why press releases as we know them should die a slow death.

Press releases are nearly useless. They typically start with a tremendous amount of top-spin, they contain pat-on-the-back phrases and meaningless quotes. Often they will contain quotes from C-level executives praising their customer focus. They often contain praise from analysts, (who are almost always paid or have a customer relationship.) And so on…

Press releases are created by committees, edited by lawyers, and then sent out at great expense through Businesswire or PRnewswire to reach the digital and physical trash bins of tens of thousands of journalists.

This madness has to end. It is wasted time and effort by hundreds of thousands of professionals.

A good press release tells a story. Plain and simple. If I’m a journalist, or a blogger, whatever, I want the release to give me the angle… to give me the story. Let’s face it, and I know this will make some journalists angry, but many of them are lazy and they simply want the story hand fed to them, with accompanying facts and figures.

A good release does that. It’s not about “launching a new company” or “we just passed 1 million sales”. Nobody cares about that stuff.

Instead, what does your new company do that solves a problem for a reader? What does it really mean to the industry that you’re in that you just passed 1 million in sales?

Online public relations is changing. I fully expect to see a more robust way to get your news releases into the hands and minds of the people who want it.

The question is… what exactly is that format going to be? If I had my choice, a release would look like this.

Headline

Video – No longer than 2-minute clip explaining press release

Summary paragraph

Quotes from executives/owners, etc…

Fact and figures and sources

Story ideas

Contact information

In that example, a journalist could then take all the pieces they needed and formulate a story from the pieces parts.

Forget Press Releases… The Video News Release Is Coming

With the ever advancing world of online video comes the next generation of the press release. The video news release, or VNR.

With Social Media Releases (New Media Releases) in the spotlight again, I felt this was the ideal timing to introduce you to the Video News Release (VNR) redux. Ready or not, start brushing up on flash, screencasting, video production, and video networks.

Online video is the next frontier for the communications industry adding a new layer of engagement to any existing PR, marketing and web initiative. In my opinion social media has reinvented the VNR, putting the power of creation and distribution in the hands of those with a camera, PC, and a broadband connection – well, and a little marketing savvy and an understanding of the pains and needs of the people they’re trying to reach…

What the social media press release is to traditional releases, amateur video, screencasts, and demos are to traditional video news releases (VNRs).

Here’s a great example. One that I find much more interesting than a written news release. But then again, I’m a visual thinker.
