Introducing: Ask The Blogger.com

For years now I’ve struggled with recommending tools, services or guides that I liked because I always worked for a company in a brand management type of role. That meant that I was unable to endorse Internet related products.

Sure, I could pass recommendations to friends and colleagues, but that was about it. Until now. I’ve recently launched my latest website called AskTheBlogger.com.

AskTheBlogger.com from Jim Kukral

AskTheBlogger.com is built for me to answer questions from anyone about anything Internet related. It doesn’t have to be blogging either. I’m most qualified to answer questions about anything related to making money online. ATB is also built to showcase my personal recommendations.

Let me give a HUGE shout out to the master Dave Taylor who has been running AskDaveTaylor.com for years and years and has been a huge inspiration to me. I know Dave will appreciate that imitiation is the best type of flattery, and as anyone can see, I’m not delving into his world of tech at all. ATB is totally different.

I should also mention Tim Carter at AskTheBuilder.com who has also made a huge impact on the way I work. Tim is THE master, and will one day go down as one of the pioneers in online monetization.

When I set out to build AskTheBlogger.com, I wanted to make it different and better. So I have been working on taking what I’ve learned over the years from blogging and online marketing and combining them together.

Specifically…

1. I’m hoping to solve problems for people. The best blogs or sites solve problems.

2. I’m writing it very conversational and direct from my voice as to keep it “bloggy”

3. I’m only recommending things that I’ve actually used, or that actually work. No snake oil here.

4. I’m adding a very personal touch to every blog entry. That means a custom recommendation graphic and I will be adding a custom video to each blog entry as well coming next week. You can view a sample of how one of these videos will look here in this question.

I hope you enjoy the site and maybe even find it inspiring. As always, contact me anytime (contact info on right).

It’s Saturday & I Couldn’t Give A Shit About Scoble Pimping PayPerPost

But guess what? Many people apparantely do. The Techmeme coverage proves it.

Look, Scoble disclosed it, and you know what? It’s business. He made a business decision based on money.

News Flash: Scoble and the other big guns are not real bloggers. They are brands. Real bloggers are 63 million people who write a blog about office furniture or their day at work. It’s a huge difference.

Let’s all stop with this PayPerPost chatter as well. I have never, ever, ever, ever, ever, (did I say ever?), ever seen a company get so much press without a big media budget.

People, the deception is gone, this discussion should be over, let’s move on? Business is business. The real blogosphere doesn’t give a shit, either do I.

Donate $100k For Premium Ad Space On Jason Calacanis’s Blog

Super blog powers unite! Shape of… a big juicy charitable blog meme!

I can feel something starting to happen. A meme you say Jim? Yes, Shawn, a meme! Earlier today I wrote about how bloggers like Jason Calacanis and others could/should be selling ads or sponsorships, or whatever they can, on their blogs for the simple sake of giving the money they don’t need to charity.

I mean, why not? If you can help people with your blog super powers, why not, right?

Well, check it out. It appears we might have something going here. Turns out Jason bought into the idea and is offering space on his blog for a $100k donation to a local school.

Jim says I’m throwing away 100k by not having ads on my personal blog. That’s probably a little high since I only get 5k page views a day/200k a month. At a $25 RPM that would be $5,000 a month/$60,000 a year.

Anyway, the reason I don’t sell the space on my blog is because:

a) I don’t have the time to sell it
b) I like the way the clean design looks
c) I make money building profitable businesses, not selling ads on my business card (and that’s what I consider my blog to be).

That being said, if someone wants to sponsor my blog I will give them three ad units on the page and a huge hug if they donate $100,000 to the Bay Ridge Prep Opportunity scholarship fund (the same one that PodTech and Godaddy sponsor for my podcast–oh yeah, time to do one!).

The scholarship goes to folks who could never afford a private school education, but who the school feels could really benefit from it. So, it’s not an academic scholarship for folks who have amazing grades, its a scholarship for folks who didn’t get dealt the best hand in life.

THE CHALLENGE FOR US ALL

Game on. Our job is to find that buyer for Jason. How do we get started? I want to see this followed through, and those kids get that money. Any advice? Maybe we could get three or more companies to pool the money and share the ads? Let’s work this out!

Then we’ll put the pressure on Seth, Mark, Guy and Scoble too :)

The Big Boys Of Blogging Could Be Rich…er

Today over at my BlogKits blog I wrote about how 5 of today’s big top bloggers are leaving close to half a million bucks on the table by not monetizing their blogs. The piece was interesting because I enlisted the feedback from several expert online marketers who provided detailed advice and projections about the topic.

If Robert Scoble, Jason Calacanis, Mark Cuban, Guy Kawasaki & Seth Godin monetized their blogs and let an online marketing expert professionally optimize them, they could collectively earn half a million dollars a year. Free Online Business Ideas For 2007

2007 is about 8 hours away. I’m looking forward to the new year, specifically because this is the year that I’m setting a few goals for myself and focusing ONLY on those few things. As those you of you who know me, I’m ADD when it comes to marketing ideas. In other words, I have too many ideas, and not enough focus. So what happens? Nothing gets done as well as it could.

So as I launch myself into 07, I have set these three main goals I need to stick to.

1. BlogKits.com – My affiliate network for bloggers. Requires the vast majority of my attention.

2. ReveNews – I serve as the publisher here for the past two years. Need to focus on launching some new projects and some general clean up.

3. Writing a book – This is the year I’m commiting to writing a book about, well, I’m not totally sure yet, but it will have to do with online influence and media and blogging and stuff like that.

That’s it.

Here’s the problem though. I have too many ideas in my head. What I’ve figured out is that the ONLY way to actually not think about all of these ideas is to share them with you and maybe, just maybe, you can take them and turn them into real businesses, therefore I won’t have to think of them anymore :)

Starting next week I will be begin to drop these ideas one at a time on this blog, and maybe at MarketingProfs or ReveNews as well. Stay tuned, and if you use them and become rich and famous, remember me on your way to the top!

Cuban Chumps Trump! Here’s Why Trump Doesn’t Need A Blog

Mark Cuban couldn’t resist jumping into the fray by calling out his ole’ buddy ‘The Donald’ on his blog today.

Now T the C on the other hand, well Donald, your blog sucks. Its actually pretty embarrasing. First of all, rule number one of blogging Donald is that you are the one that is supposed to write the posts on the blog. Less than half the posts on the front page of the blog have your name as the author let alone are written by you . Blogs are supposed to be personal, not corporate Donald.

Yeah, his blog does suck, but you know what? I would argue that some people don’t need blogs, and Donald is one of them. Trump has a plan and it works, and he don’t need no stinkin’ blog to keep it working. Here’s how Trump operates:

1. He overloads you with his brands, literally so much that you just can’t see through it all and your mind just gives in.

2. Then, when he’s attacked, he hits back… harder.

3. Wash, rinse, repeat.

It’s like being in a cult where they brainwash you. You know what? It works, very well. Gotta give him credit for it.

It’s because of that methodology that he doesn’t need a blog, and I argue that him even having a blog would hurt that system he has in place. A blog is to show transparency, and that my friends is in direct odds with Trump’s branding mantra.

Blog Tag – 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

Alright, I’ll play, why not? Today I got “blog tagged” by Shmuly. The idea is that you tag 5 of your blogger buddies and pass the torch, also that you (the tag-ee) must write 5 things about yourself that many people don’t know. So here goes my list, with my 5 tags below.

1. I read magazines from back to front. Not books or newspapers, just magazines. I’m not sure why.

2. I am not OCD, but I must have the last numeric digit on a gas pump fillup be 6, no matter what.

3. I’ve been blogging since August 2001, a month before 9/11. Archives here.

4. My nickname growing up from my two older brothers was “Shag” because of my haircut in the late 70’s. Which, is ironic today as that hairstyle is back and popular with teenagers today.

5. I built my first webpage in Pagemaker in I think 96? Took a job as a web designer 2 months later and was handed a “Learn HTML” book on my first day. This was before tables existed.

Ok, assuming you’re in the online/marketing/interactive agency business. If you’re a shoe repairman, you might not find it so intriguing. :9

One of the most common questions I am asked by marketing agencies seeking my advice – especially those that are newly-started or still relatively small – is “how do I attract new clients and grow my business?” While there are many ways to accomplish this task, depending on your resources and your target market, there are some proven strategies that any marketing firm can implement.

Online Marketing Tip: If It Feels Wrong, Don’t Do It

Ok, so we’ve got quite a storm brewing from a story in the Washington Post the other day that basically says that word of mouth marketing, well, read this.

The FTC issued an official opinion stating that people who endorse of a products, and who are compensated for their efforts, must disclose the nature of that relationship to their “customers”.

Now, some are already trying to tie word of mouth into Affiliate Marketing, which I think is a big, big stretch. I’ll have more of my thoughts on this here and over at ReveNews over the next few days, but I wanted to write this post to illustrate one key message.

And that is… if what you’re about to do “feels” wrong, it probably is.

This rule can be applied to anything, but in our case, online marketing more specifically, across search engine optimization, email marketing and affiliate marketing… as well as any other type of marketing you can name.

The next time you’re about to do something, think to yourself… “Does this feel wrong?”

You know what to do.
